Caesarean Delivery

A caesarean delivery, commonly known as a C-section, is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through incisions in the mother’s abdomen and uterus. As an experienced obstetrician, I provide this essential service to ensure the safety and well-being of both mother and child when vaginal delivery isn’t possible or advisable.

While many pregnancies result in natural births, there are circumstances where a C-section becomes the safest option. These may include:

Fetal distress
Prolonged labor
Breech presentation
Multiple pregnancies
Placental problems
Maternal health conditions

Throughout your pregnancy, we’ll monitor your health and your baby’s development closely. If a C-section becomes necessary, I’ll explain the reasons and procedure in detail, ensuring you’re fully informed and comfortable with the decision.

The caesarean delivery process typically involves the following steps:

Preoperative Preparation: You’ll receive anesthesia, usually a spinal block or epidural, allowing you to stay awake during the procedure while ensuring you’re pain-free.
Incision: A horizontal incision is made in the lower abdomen, followed by an incision in the uterus.
Delivery: Your baby is carefully removed from the uterus.
Newborn Care: Your baby is examined and, if all is well, brought to you for skin-to-skin contact.
Closing the Incisions: The uterus and abdominal incisions are closed with sutures.
Recovery: You’ll be monitored closely in the recovery room before being moved to your hospital room.

While a C-section is major surgery, modern techniques have made it a very safe procedure. Recovery time is typically longer than with vaginal birth, usually requiring a hospital stay of 2-4 days. You’ll receive detailed instructions for postoperative care, pain management, and activity restrictions to ensure proper healing.

It’s natural to have mixed emotions about having a C-section, especially if it wasn’t part of your original birth plan. Remember, the goal is always a healthy outcome for you and your baby. Many women find that connecting with other C-section mothers or joining support groups can be helpful in processing their experience.

As your obstetrician, I’m committed to providing compassionate care throughout your C-section journey. We’ll work together to ensure you feel supported, informed, and confident. I along with the team be there to answer your questions, address your concerns, and guide you through your recovery.

In some cases, women who’ve had a C-section may be candidates for a vaginal birth in future pregnancies (VBAC). We can discuss this option in detail if you’re planning future pregnancies.

Whether planned or unexpected, a caesarean delivery is a valid and often necessary way to bring your baby into the world. With expert medical care and support, you can have a positive birth experience and a smooth transition into motherhood, regardless of the delivery method.

Remember, every birth is unique and special. My role is to ensure that you and your baby receive the safest and most appropriate care, tailored to your individual needs and circumstances.
